The Construction of the Education and Innovation Center

If you’ve recently driven by the hospital, you may be wondering what all the construction is about or how the development of the Cameron Education and Innovation Center is coming along. Look no further than this blog to learn all about what is being built, why Cameron is developing this center, and how it’s going to positively impact our community.

What is being built behind Cameron Hospital?

This center will offer middle, high school and college students, nurses, first responders, and community members a place for education, and hands-on training that will impact our region. This state-of-the-art facility will include a simulation lab, skills lab and classrooms.

Through a partnership with Trine University’s Health Science program and Cameron’s Education Center, a decision was made to create a unique offering which will bring new students and nurses to the region. The partnership will create jobs on the education and nursing sides, resulting in a positive impact in attracting talent and accelerating the city’s economic growth.

Why is Cameron developing this center?

Many of us have heard of the critical shortage of nurses across the country. In Steuben County, new Registered Nurse (RN) job growth in the next decade is expected to rise 21% , from 244 to 295. There are expected to be 193 RN job openings in the next decade here locally and the need will be higher considering the 28% of RNs in our county are at or near retirement age.

How is the Education and Innovation Center going to benefit our community?

Health care facilities where nurses work often are important economic anchors in local communities. Nursing salaries can have a considerable direct, or indirect economic impact on cities and towns across the U.S. Nursing students may be attracted to the ability to receive an education locally, potentially leading them to stay within Steuben County after graduation. Students who studied in the Education and Innovation Center will have developed personal relationships and connections with Cameron, making them more inclined to stay within the community to work.

Each day the Education and Innovation Center gets one step closer to being finished, all thanks to the hard work and dedication of the many construction crews. As of July 2024, the framing is complete. The HVAC-R ducts are being installed, scaffolding, the roof, and much more are being worked on. This center promises to be a valuable addition to our community, offering not just state-of-the-art medical care but also a warm and supportive environment where residents can thrive. Its presence will enhance accessibility to essential healthcare services, fostering a healthier and more connected community for years to come.
