How to Prepare for Surgery

Undergoing surgery can be overwhelming. However, with the right preparation, the process can be smoother and seem less daunting. Cameron’s General Surgery team is here for you at each step of the way. Take a look at this simple guide to help you get prepared for going into an upcoming surgical procedure.

Understand Your Procedure

Take time to discuss the surgery with your healthcare provider(s) so you fully understand what will happen before, during, and after the procedure. Ask questions about the process, any potential risks, and the expected recovery timeline. Familiarizing yourself with the details can help reduce anxiety and allow you to feel more in control and at peace.

Follow Pre-Op Instructions

Your doctor will provide specific instructions to prepare your body for surgery. If fasting is required, ensure you stop eating and drinking at the recommended time to prevent any potential complications. Review which medications are safe to take, and which should be paused.

Prepare for Your Recovery

Think ahead about what you’ll need while recovering at home. Arrange for someone to drive you to and from the hospital since you likely won’t be able to drive afterward. Set up a recovery space with self-care essentials like pillows, medications, snacks, and some entertainment. Having everything ready before your surgery ensures a more comfortable recovery and less stress when you get home.

Dress Comfortably

Choose loose, easy-to-wear clothing for the day of surgery. Avoid wearing jewelry, makeup, or nail polish, as these can interfere with certain medical equipment or procedures. Remember to leave any valuables at home.
