The Impact of Volunteers

Cameron Hospital, like many other healthcare systems, relies heavily on the selfless commitment of our volunteers. They come from all walks of life, spanning generations and backgrounds, connected by a common purpose: to make a difference in the lives of others. Whether they are retirees seeking to give back to their community or individuals simply driven by a desire to help, volunteers at Cameron Hospital form an integral part of our greater hospital team.

We met with the current Volunteer President, Darlene Ehle, and past President, Sandy Duncan to learn about their experience as volunteers and the impact it has had on their lives.

For many, like Darlene, volunteering isn’t just a task; it’s a heartfelt commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. Every interaction, every moment spent lending a hand, carries a profound significance.

One encounter stands out vividly. A tearful wife received devastating news about her husband’s condition. In that moment, all she needed was a hand to hold, a presence to reassure her she wasn’t alone. As Sandy sat beside her, offering silent support, an unspoken bond formed. Even when her son arrived, she clung to my hand, finding solace in our shared presence. Her heartfelt gratitude, expressed in a warm hug and words of appreciation, reaffirmed the impact of simple acts of kindness during moments of immense vulnerability.

By embracing kindness and a willingness to learn, volunteers help in the cultivation of an environment of mutual respect and continuous improvement that Cameron strives to maintain.  Darlene and Sandy stated that being knowledgeable about the areas in which they serve enhances their ability to provide informed assistance, enriching the volunteer experience for both them and those they serve.

Amidst the challenges and uncertainties in volunteer work, maintaining focus on the fundamental goal of helping others is paramount. Whether it’s through attentive listening, exercising patience, or going the extra mile, volunteers embody the spirit of service with every task they undertake.

Our volunteers recently decided to donate $25,000 to the Cameron Education and Innovation Center. This incredible act of generosity speaks volumes about their dedication to our core values. Everyone at Cameron is beyond appreciative of their commitment to going above and beyond for each patient that comes through our doors.
