What Is a Psychiatrist?

Psychiatrists specialize in diagnosing and treating individuals with mental illness. Unlike psychologists, psychiatrists are medical doctors — usually with an M.D. or D.O. — that have completed a four-year residency in psychiatry. Because they are doctors, psychiatrists are also able to prescribe medication, while psychologists are not.

Psychiatrists diagnose and manage treatment plans for a range of complex mental illnesses, including:

  • Addiction and Substance Use Disorders
  • Acute Stress Disorder
  • Anxiety
  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Bipolar Disorders
  • Borderline Personality Disorder
  • Conduct Disorders
  • Depression
  • Impulse Control
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Schizophrenia

Psychiatrists may specialize in a specific area of expertise, for example, forensic psychiatry, adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, emergency psychiatry or eating disorders. These specializations often require additional training and experience.

When Should You See a Psychiatrist?

Individuals who need help to boost their mental health are sometimes embarrassed because of the stigma that is still associated with treatment. However, it is important to seek the support of a psychiatrist when symptoms of a mental illness begin to show, and before they reach a crisis point.

Possible Symptoms Include:

  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicidal thoughts
  • Extreme mood changes
  • Obsessive thoughts
  • Detachment from reality or hallucinations
  • Withdrawal from friends and family
  • Excessive anger or violent outbursts
  • Excessive feelings of feeling or worry
  • Excessive social anxiety
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Panic attacks
  • Changes in eating habits
  • Significant fatigue or low energy
  • Trouble relating to people or situations
  • Erratic sleeping patterns or restlessness
  • Problems with alcohol or drug use
  • Hearing voices
Some symptoms, such as a panic attack or the hearing of voices, may appear suddenly. Others, however, may increase over a long period of time, such as feelings of hopelessness or the inability to deal with daily life.

Psychiatry Evaluation

What to Expect From Your Psychiatry Appointment

When you see a psychiatrist, they will first want to complete a physical and mental evaluation with the help of laboratory and psychological tests. This will help them get a better understanding of your current state and will help determine the best course of treatment.

Psychiatrists provide patients with comprehensive treatment plans utilizing treatment methods, including talk therapy, play therapy and group therapy. Their goals are to help patients change behaviors or thought patterns, explore the effects of past relationships or traumas on current behaviors, or focus on problem-solving skills for everyday life. They can also help patients develop coping skills, manage stress and deal with anxiety.

When necessary, psychiatrists can also prescribe medicine — including antidepressants, stimulants and mood stabilizers for individuals and monitor its effects.
