Cameron History

Cameron Hospital has a long tradition of providing high-quality healthcare services to the people of Steuben County and surrounding communities. Through the years we have helped generation after generation enjoy better health and live comfortably, and our hospital continues to serve the medical needs of our community.

Hospital Origins

At one time, Angola had two hospitals. The first was founded in 1926 by Dr. Don F. Cameron, while the second, known as Elmhurst, was established by Dr. Lester L. Eberhart in 1945. Eventually, in 1972, the two hospitals merged into one hospital – Cameron Memorial Community Hospital, which was located at its current site of 416 East Maumee Street in Angola, Indiana.

Message from CEO

Welcome

On behalf of the staff and physicians, I would like to welcome you to Cameron Memorial Community Hospital! We are an independent, not-for-profit, 25-bed critical access hospital offering health and wellness services to our community members in northeast Indiana, northwest Ohio and southern Michigan.

While certainly accurate, this description doesn’t capture the unique nature of Cameron. We have a robust staff of skilled doctors and nurses who provide a caliber of medical care that is unusual for a hospital our size. In addition, our ancillary staff is one of our greatest strengths, providing supporting services and personalized, one-on-one care. When you combine this dedicated staff with the sophisticated technology our facility houses, it’s easy to see why Cameron Hospital is recognized as a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital.

Cameron does share some commonalities with larger hospitals – our technology and equipment, including advanced diagnostics. We offer the same high-tech services, but also a personal touch that I believe makes a real difference to our patients. And, at Cameron, we also deliver an undeniable economic value for our patients, which is more important today than ever.

I am privileged to lead a team that has such a positive impact on the lives of the people we serve. When people turn to us for care, we see them as so much more than just a number, like you may find in larger hospitals. Here, our patients are our neighbors, friends and family. They are people we not only care for, but who care about us as well.

Our impact goes beyond healthcare. Cameron is one of the largest employers in the area, providing quality jobs for more than 500 people. The hospital attracts highly-educated and skilled professionals to the area, helping make a positive economic impact, as well. We also provide wellness services, health education, indigent care and urgent care that otherwise wouldn’t exist here.

While we are extremely proud of Cameron Hospital’s long history of serving our community, we are focused on the work we are doing today and the plans we have for tomorrow as our hospital continues to grow and evolve. One thing is for sure, this is an exciting time to be a part of Cameron Memorial Community Hospital.

Thank you for your interest in discovering more about us.

Sincerely,

Connie McCahill
Chief Executive Officer & President

Critical Access

Cameron Memorial Community Hospital has been officially recognized as a Critical Access Hospital (CAH). This means our hospital is certified to receive cost-based reimbursement from Medicare intended to improve financial performance and reduce hospital closures. The CAH designation is designed to reduce the financial vulnerability of rural hospitals and improve access to quality healthcare by keeping essential services in rural communities*. Cameron meets the necessary criteria due to our rural location, the number of beds we have and the fact that we provide 24/7 emergency care services.

The CAH status helps ensure that Cameron Hospital remains financially viable, so we can focus on fulfilling the healthcare and wellness needs of our community. The designation also grants our hospital with the CAH network of acute care hospitals for support and expansion of services, and enables more flexible staffing and services specific to our community.
